How to Split a Photo for Instagram (Desktop and Phone)
Step by step: which photos survive being cut, what resolution you need, how to crop to a square, and how to split into nine tiles on desktop or phone.
Splitting a photo across nine posts is the cheapest way to make a profile look designed. The cutting itself takes about ten seconds. Nearly all of the quality difference comes from choices you make before and after — which photo you pick, how big it is, and what order you publish in.
The short version: crop your photo to a square, cut it into a 3×3 grid of 1080×1080 tiles, then post them in reverse — bottom-right tile first.
Step 1: pick a photo that survives being cut
Not every image works. A grid chops your picture into nine pieces that people first encounter individually, in their feed, as isolated squares. Only later does anyone see them assembled.
Photos that work:
- One strong subject, roughly centred. A face, a building, a product. The centre tile carries it and the surrounding tiles read as context.
- Bold shapes and colour blocks. Murals, graphic design, sunsets, patterns. Each fragment still looks like something.
- Deliberate negative space. Sky, sand, a plain wall. Empty tiles feel intentional rather than broken.
Photos that don’t:
- Busy scenes with detail everywhere. Crowds, cluttered rooms, dense foliage. Every tile becomes visual noise.
- Text. It gets sliced mid-word. If you need words, put them entirely inside one tile.
- Faces near the cut lines. An eye in one square and a mouth in another is unsettling, not artistic.
Step 2: get the resolution right
This is where most grids quietly lose quality, and it’s just arithmetic.
Instagram wants 1080×1080 pixels for a square post. You need nine of those. Nine tiles at 1080 each, three across, means your source photo has to be at least 3240 pixels on its short side for every tile to be full resolution.

A photo straight off a modern phone camera is typically 3000–4000 px on the short side, so you’re usually fine. A screenshot, a downloaded image, or anything that’s been through a messaging app usually isn’t — WhatsApp and iMessage both re-compress hard.
Check before you cut, not after. On a Mac, select the file and press Space; the dimensions show in the preview title bar. On Windows, right-click → Properties → Details. On a phone, open the photo’s info panel.
Step 3: crop to a square
A 3×3 grid is square. A rectangular photo has to lose something.
You have two honest options:
- Centre crop takes the largest square from the middle of your photo and discards the edges. This is the right default — it preserves proportions, so nothing looks stretched.
- Stretch to fit squashes the whole frame into a square, keeping every element but distorting them. Occasionally useful for abstract images. Almost never right for people.
If the subject isn’t centred, crop the photo to a square yourself first, positioning it where you want, then split the square. Any photo app can do this — and it gives you control that an automatic centre crop can’t.
Step 4: cut it into nine tiles
You can do this by hand in any image editor — set up guides at one-third intervals, export nine crops, name them carefully. It works and it’s tedious, and hand-placed guides drift by a pixel or two, which shows up as visible seams once the tiles are side by side.
The faster route is a splitter that does the arithmetic exactly. Ours runs in the browser: drop the photo in, it cuts nine 1080×1080 tiles, and you download them individually or as a ZIP. Your image never leaves your device — the whole thing happens in the page, so there’s no upload and nothing stored on a server.
On a phone, the same page works in mobile Safari and Chrome. Tap the drop area, pick a photo from your camera roll, and the ZIP saves to your Files app. Instagram can then post straight from there — no desktop step in the middle.
Step 5: post them in reverse
Here’s the part that catches everyone.
Instagram builds your profile grid from the bottom right upwards, because it shows newest posts first, laid out left to right. So the last tile you upload lands in the top-left corner.
Post backwards: bottom-right tile first, top-left tile last.
If you use our splitter, the files come out of the ZIP already named for this — post-1-of-9 through post-9-of-9. Upload them in numerical order and you’re done. If you cut the tiles some other way, rename them yourself before you open Instagram; doing the mental arithmetic nine times while uploading is how mistakes happen.

Publish all nine in one sitting. A half-finished grid sitting on your profile overnight shows every visitor a broken picture, and the individual tiles going out to feeds as fragments don’t do you any favours either.
Things that go wrong
Visible seams between tiles. Almost always means the tiles were cut from a non-square region, or exported at slightly different sizes. Cut from an exact square and export every tile at identical dimensions.
Instagram re-cropped my tiles. It only does this if what you uploaded wasn’t square. Check the actual pixel dimensions of the exported files — 1080×1080, not 1080×1079.
The colours shifted after uploading. Instagram converts to sRGB. If your photo is in Display P3 or Adobe RGB, saturated colours will dull slightly. Convert to sRGB before splitting if that matters to you.
Everything looks soft. Go back to step 2. Your source was under 3240 px.
